Safety & Support
We believe that genuine adventure requires genuine support. Everything we build — from our host organisation partnerships to our on-ground team — is designed so you can explore Cape Town with confidence.
24/7 on-ground emergency contact
Available around the clock for all active programme participants. Response within 15 minutes.
On-ground support
Every CGC participant has a named local coordinator from day one. This isn't a call centre — it's a real person, based in Cape Town, who knows the city and knows your programme.
Your coordinator
From the moment you land at Cape Town International, you have a named CGC coordinator available by phone, WhatsApp, and email. They attend your orientation, check in at the midpoint of your programme, and are reachable after hours for anything urgent.
They are not a distant help desk. They live and work in Cape Town and know which hospital to go to, which Uber driver to trust, and which neighbourhood pharmacist stays open late.
What we cover
Emergency procedure
In any emergency — medical, personal safety, or otherwise — your first call is to your CGC coordinator on the 24/7 number. They will activate the appropriate response: ambulance, police, or consular services, depending on the situation.
CGC maintains a documented emergency protocol for all active programme cohorts. Parents or next of kin are notified within one hour of any serious incident, per the emergency contact details provided at enrolment.
+27 79 623 1565 — available 24/7. State your name, location, and nature of the emergency.
Coordinator contacts emergency services, notifies your next of kin, and travels to your location if required.
CGC assists with documentation for your travel insurance claim. All incidents are logged and reported to your home institution if required.
Accommodation
CGC does not place participants in random Airbnb listings. We partner with a small number of carefully vetted accommodation providers in well-connected, walkable Cape Town neighbourhoods.
Our preferred neighbourhoods
All CGC-recommended accommodation is located in one of three neighbourhoods: Sea Point, Green Point, or De Waterkant. These areas are safe, well-lit, walkable, and within 15–20 minutes of most host organisations in the City Bowl.
Our vetting standards
Important note
We recommend rather than bundle accommodation so that participants can choose a price point that works for their budget. Monthly costs at our preferred partners range from approximately R8,000–R15,000 per month (roughly $440–$830 USD at current exchange rates), depending on room type and duration.
Every accepted participant receives a curated accommodation guide with our preferred partners' details, current pricing, and booking instructions as part of their welcome pack.
Insurance
All participants must hold valid comprehensive travel and health insurance for the full duration of their stay in South Africa. Proof of insurance must be submitted to CGC at least 14 days before arrival. This is a condition of enrolment — not a suggestion.
Minimum coverage requirements
Recommended providers
The following providers are commonly used by international students and are known to meet CGC's minimum requirements. Always verify coverage details before purchasing.
CGC is not affiliated with or compensated by any of these providers. We recommend them based on participant feedback and coverage standards only.
Cape Town safety
Cape Town is a city of extraordinary contrasts — and we won't pretend otherwise. Like any major global city, it requires awareness. The city centre, Atlantic Seaboard, and southern suburbs where our participants live and work are well-served areas with active street life and reliable infrastructure.
Our participants walk to coffee shops, use the promenade at Sea Point, explore the Bo-Kaap and Woodstock on weekends, and travel to wine country on day trips. What we ask of our participants is the same common sense we'd ask of anyone new to a city: stay aware of your surroundings, use Uber rather than walking long distances at night, and lean on your coordinator when something feels off.
Practical safety guidance
Visa information
South Africa offers visa-free entry for most nationalities for stays of up to 90 days, which covers all CGC programme durations.
CGC support letter
All accepted CGC participants receive a formal letter on company letterhead confirming their programme placement, dates, and local support arrangements. This letter includes our CIPC registration number (2026/304461/07) and can be used for visa applications, travel insurance documentation, and university credit applications.
