Cape Town is a vibrant, complex city — and like any major global city, it requires awareness. The neighbourhoods where CGC participants live and work (Sea Point, Green Point, De Waterkant, and the City Bowl) are well-connected, well-lit, and actively populated areas where our participants walk to coffee shops, explore markets on weekends, and socialise in the evenings.

We won’t tell you Cape Town has no challenges — it does, and we respect your intelligence enough to be honest about that. What we can tell you is this: every CGC participant has a named local coordinator available 24/7, arrives with a full safety orientation on day one, and is supported throughout their programme by someone who lives and knows the city deeply.

Practical guidance we give every participant:

  • Use Uber for all transportation after dark — it’s reliable, safe, and inexpensive
  • Keep phones and laptops out of sight in unfamiliar public spaces
  • Save the CGC emergency number (+27 79 623 1565) and SA emergency services (10177) before you land
  • Download the Namola safety app — the local emergency response app used by Cape Town residents
  • Register with your country’s embassy in Pretoria before you travel
Our 24/7 emergency line is +27 79 623 1565. Response within 15 minutes for all active programme participants.

Your first call is always to your CGC coordinator on +27 79 623 1565. They will activate the appropriate response — ambulance, hospital transfer, or consular contact — depending on the situation. They will also notify your emergency contact within one hour of any serious incident.

Cape Town has excellent private healthcare facilities. Participants are treated at Netcare or Mediclinic private hospitals, both of which have English-speaking staff and high standards of care. Your travel insurance (mandatory for all CGC participants) covers emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation, and repatriation if required.

CGC staff will accompany you to medical appointments where required and assist with all insurance documentation and claim initiation. You will never navigate a health emergency in Cape Town alone.

All participants must hold valid travel and health insurance covering emergency medical treatment (minimum $100,000), medical evacuation, and repatriation. Proof of insurance is required 14 days before arrival.

Most participants do not need a visa. South Africa grants visa-free entry for up to 90 days to citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and most EU member states — which covers all CGC programme durations (4, 6, and 8 weeks).

Key entry requirements regardless of nationality:

  • Passport valid for at least 30 days beyond your departure date (most immigration officers expect 6 months — check your passport well in advance)
  • At least 2–3 blank pages for entry stamps
  • Return or onward flight booking accessible on arrival
  • Accommodation address and host contact details

If you hold a passport from a country that does require a South African visa, please flag this during your application. CGC can provide a formal programme support letter on company letterhead — including our CIPC registration number 2026/304461/07 — to support your visa application.

Always verify the latest visa requirements directly with the South African Department of Home Affairs before travelling, as requirements can change.

Accommodation is not included in the programme fee — and this is a deliberate decision. Rather than bundling a fixed accommodation cost, CGC provides every accepted participant with a curated accommodation guide featuring our personally vetted preferred partners.

All recommended properties are located in Sea Point, Green Point, or De Waterkant. Every property has been inspected in person and meets our minimum standards:

  • 4.8-star rating or above across booking platforms
  • Secure building access and 24/7 host or manager contact
  • Reliable high-speed Wi-Fi verified for remote working
  • Within 500m of public transport and a supermarket
  • No shared bathrooms with non-programme guests

Approximate monthly costs: R8,000–R15,000 per month (roughly $440–$830 USD at current exchange rates). This is significantly more affordable than equivalent accommodation in London, New York, or Sydney.

We make the introduction and hold preferred rates for CGC participants — you book directly, keeping full flexibility.

Yes — you are welcome to arrange your own accommodation. If you do, we ask that you share your address and host contact details with us before arrival so your coordinator can account for your location in any emergency situation.

If you arrange your own accommodation, we strongly recommend staying in Sea Point, Green Point, De Waterkant, or the City Bowl — the areas closest to our host organisations and cultural programming venues.

Whether you use our preferred partners or arrange your own, CGC requires your accommodation address on file before your programme starts. This is a safety requirement, not a formality.

Academic credit is determined by your home institution, not by CGC — but we make it as easy as possible for your university to grant it. Every CGC participant receives:

  • A formal Certificate of Completion on CGC letterhead, detailing programme dates, host organisation, sector, and weekly hours
  • A written host supervisor evaluation of your performance and contribution
  • A CGC programme support letter for submission to your academic department
  • A LinkedIn digital badge (6-week and 8-week participants) verifiable by employers and institutions

We recommend speaking to your academic advisor or study abroad office before applying to CGC, so you understand your institution’s specific requirements and can plan accordingly.

If your university study abroad office would like to speak with us directly, we are happy to arrange a call. Contact us at enquire@capeglobalcollective.com.

Placements are matched based on your academic background, career interests, and stated preferences from your application. CGC works with host organisations across five sectors:

  • Media & Communications — journalism, content creation, digital publishing, PR
  • NGOs & Social Impact — community development, education, environmental, youth programmes
  • Business & Startups — product, operations, marketing, business development
  • Creative Arts & Design — graphic design, film, photography, cultural organisations
  • Sustainable Tourism & Hospitality — responsible travel, destination marketing, eco-tourism operations

You will be asked to rank your sector preferences in your application. CGC will confirm your placement before you accept your programme offer — you will never arrive in Cape Town without knowing exactly where you are going and who your supervisor is.

All host organisations are vetted by CGC before any participant is placed with them. We assess workplace environment, supervision quality, and the relevance of the work before signing a host agreement.

The programme is structured to balance professional experience with genuine cultural immersion:

  • Monday – Thursday: Full days at your host organisation (typically 9am–5pm). You work alongside your host team on real projects, supervised by a designated host contact.
  • Friday: CGC cultural programming — workshops, site visits, guest speakers, neighbourhood walks, and cohort group sessions. Fridays are mandatory and one of the most valued parts of the programme.
  • Weekends: Free and entirely your own — but CGC organises optional group excursions. Past excursions include Franschhoek, Hermanus, the Cape Winelands, the Garden Route, and Robben Island.

6-week and 8-week participants have one or two included guided weekend excursions respectively. 4-week participants can join optional excursions at their own cost.

Payment schedule: A non-refundable deposit of 30% of your total programme fee is due upon signing your Student Programme Agreement. The remaining 70% balance is due no later than 30 days before your programme start date.

Cancellation policy:

  • More than 60 days before start: Full refund of all payments made, less the 30% deposit
  • 30–60 days before start: 50% refund of the total fee paid
  • Fewer than 30 days before start: No refund
  • No-show or early departure: No refund

All cancellations must be submitted in writing to enquire@capeglobalcollective.com. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance with trip cancellation coverage.

If CGC cancels a programme due to circumstances within our control, you will receive a full refund of all fees paid. In the case of force majeure events, CGC will offer a programme credit or partial refund at our reasonable discretion.

CGC accepts payment in USD and GBP via international bank transfer. All invoices are issued in USD by default — if you prefer to pay in GBP, let us know when you receive your invoice.

US students can pay via standard ACH or wire transfer using our US local account details — no international transfer fees on your end. UK students pay via BACS or CHAPS to our UK account details. Both methods typically clear within 1–3 business days.

A full payment guide with step-by-step instructions is included in your acceptance pack. Any payment queries, contact us at enquire@capeglobalcollective.com.

CGC does not currently accept credit card payments. Bank transfer avoids the 2.5–3.5% card surcharges that would otherwise apply to fees at this level.
