On-ground support

You're never on your own in Cape Town.

Every CGC participant has a named local coordinator from day one. This isn't a call centre — it's a real person, based in Cape Town, who knows the city and knows your programme.

Your coordinator

A dedicated point of contact — always

From the moment you land at Cape Town International, you have a named CGC coordinator available by phone, WhatsApp, and email. They attend your orientation, check in at the midpoint of your programme, and are reachable after hours for anything urgent.

They are not a distant help desk. They live and work in Cape Town and know which hospital to go to, which Uber driver to trust, and which neighbourhood pharmacist stays open late.

What we cover

Hands-on help when it matters

  • Airport meet-and-greet on arrival
  • Orientation briefing on day one — safety, transport, neighbourhood guide
  • Midpoint welfare check-in (week 2 or 3 depending on programme length)
  • Liaison with host organisation if workplace issues arise
  • Emergency coordination: hospitals, police, embassies, family notification
  • Accompaniment to medical appointments where required
  • Airport assistance on departure

Emergency procedure

What happens if something goes wrong

In any emergency — medical, personal safety, or otherwise — your first call is to your CGC coordinator on the 24/7 number. They will activate the appropriate response: ambulance, police, or consular services, depending on the situation.

CGC maintains a documented emergency protocol for all active programme cohorts. Parents or next of kin are notified within one hour of any serious incident, per the emergency contact details provided at enrolment.

01

Call CGC emergency line

+27 79 623 1565 — available 24/7. State your name, location, and nature of the emergency.

02

CGC activates response

Coordinator contacts emergency services, notifies your next of kin, and travels to your location if required.

03

Insurance claim initiated

CGC assists with documentation for your travel insurance claim. All incidents are logged and reported to your home institution if required.

Accommodation

Vetted, safe, and close to everything.

CGC does not place participants in random Airbnb listings. We partner with a small number of carefully vetted accommodation providers in well-connected, walkable Cape Town neighbourhoods.

Our preferred neighbourhoods

Where we place participants

All CGC-recommended accommodation is located in one of three neighbourhoods: Sea Point, Green Point, or De Waterkant. These areas are safe, well-lit, walkable, and within 15–20 minutes of most host organisations in the City Bowl.

  • Sea Point — beachfront promenade, supermarkets, cafés, and safe evening walking
  • Green Point — close to the V&A Waterfront and Cape Town Stadium, very walkable
  • De Waterkant — central, vibrant, steps from the creative and startup district

Our vetting standards

What we check before recommending a property

  • Minimum 4.8-star rating across booking platforms
  • In-person inspection by CGC coordinator before recommending
  • 24/7 host or building manager contact available
  • Secure building access (key fob, intercom, or security desk)
  • Reliable Wi-Fi — verified for remote working speed
  • Within 500m of a supermarket and public transport stop
  • No shared bathrooms with non-programme guests

Important note

Accommodation is not included in programme fees — here's why

We recommend rather than bundle accommodation so that participants can choose a price point that works for their budget. Monthly costs at our preferred partners range from approximately R8,000–R15,000 per month (roughly $440–$830 USD at current exchange rates), depending on room type and duration.

Every accepted participant receives a curated accommodation guide with our preferred partners' details, current pricing, and booking instructions as part of their welcome pack.

Insurance

Coverage is mandatory. Here's exactly what you need.

All participants must hold valid comprehensive travel and health insurance for the full duration of their stay in South Africa. Proof of insurance must be submitted to CGC at least 14 days before arrival. This is a condition of enrolment — not a suggestion.

Minimum coverage requirements

Your policy must include all of the following

✚
Emergency medical treatment
Hospitalisation, surgery, and emergency care in South Africa. Minimum USD $100,000 coverage.
✈
Medical evacuation and repatriation
Emergency medical evacuation to your home country if required.
✕
Trip cancellation and curtailment
Covers programme costs if you must cancel or leave early due to a covered reason.
§
Personal liability
Covers claims made against you by third parties during your stay.

Recommended providers

Plans that meet our requirements

The following providers are commonly used by international students and are known to meet CGC's minimum requirements. Always verify coverage details before purchasing.

  • World Nomads — popular with students, straightforward claims process, covers South Africa comprehensively
  • IMG Global — strong medical evacuation coverage, recommended for US students
  • Allianz Travel — widely accepted, good for UK and European students
  • AIG Travel Guard — strong US-based option with solid Africa coverage

CGC is not affiliated with or compensated by any of these providers. We recommend them based on participant feedback and coverage standards only.

Cape Town safety

An honest guide to navigating Cape Town.

Cape Town is a city of extraordinary contrasts — and we won't pretend otherwise. Like any major global city, it requires awareness. The city centre, Atlantic Seaboard, and southern suburbs where our participants live and work are well-served areas with active street life and reliable infrastructure.

Our participants walk to coffee shops, use the promenade at Sea Point, explore the Bo-Kaap and Woodstock on weekends, and travel to wine country on day trips. What we ask of our participants is the same common sense we'd ask of anyone new to a city: stay aware of your surroundings, use Uber rather than walking long distances at night, and lean on your coordinator when something feels off.

Practical safety guidance

  • Use Uber for all transportation after dark — it's reliable, safe, and cheap in Cape Town
  • Walk confidently in Sea Point, Green Point, De Waterkant, and the City Bowl during daylight
  • Keep phones and laptops out of sight in unfamiliar public spaces
  • Don't carry large amounts of cash — card payments are accepted almost everywhere
  • Save the CGC emergency number and SA emergency services numbers in your phone before you arrive
  • Tell your coordinator if you plan to travel outside Cape Town for the weekend
  • Use the buddy system for evening social events — especially in the first two weeks
  • Download the Namola safety app — a South African emergency response app widely used by locals
  • Register with your country's embassy in Pretoria before you arrive
